What Causes Supinated Feet
Overview
people finder with high-arched feet often feel discomfort when walking barefoot on hard surfaces and require shoes with thick, supportive soles. If you have high-arched feet, chances are your Achilles tendon is also tight, which can contribute to metatarsalgia. However, there are some people with high-arched feet who experience no symptoms at all.
Causes
Among the cases of neuromuscular pes cavus, 50% have been attributed to Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, which is the most common type of inherited neuropathy with an incidence of 1 per 2,500 persons affected. Also known as Hereditary Motor and Sensory Neuropathy (HMSN), it is genetically heterogeneous and usually presents in the first decade of life with delayed motor milestones, distal muscle weakness, clumsiness and frequent falls. By adulthood, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease can cause painful foot deformities such as pes cavus. Although it is a relatively common disorder affecting the foot and ankle, little is known about the distribution of muscle weakness, severity of orthopaedic deformities, or types of foot pain experienced. There are no cures or effective treatment to halt the progression of any form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.
Symptoms
Symptoms may vary from a mild problem with shoe fitting to significant disability.
Diagnosis
Upon meeting with your podiatrist he or she will likely recommend either an orthotic insert, new shoes for pes cavus, or both. X-Rays may be taken as well to determine the bone structure?s contribution to the ailment.
Non Surgical Treatment
If in fact you do have pes cavus, there are a handful of treatment options available to you. To overarching goal of treatment is to allow the patient to walk comfortably without symptoms. Your medical profession will determine whether surgical or non-surgical methods should be pursued. In the event that your doctor prescribes a non-surgical treatment you may be asked to undergo physical therapy to stretch out the tightened muscles. Besides stretching, your doctor may prescribe an orthotic solution.
Surgical Treatment
There are numerous surgical approaches aimed at correcting the deformity and rebalancing the foot. Surgical procedures fall into three main groups.
Soft-tissue procedures
Plantar fascia release, achilles tendon lengthening, tendon transfer.
Osteotomy
Metatarsal, midfoot or calcaneal
Bone stabilising procedures
Triple arthrodesis.
